Yes! I resonate with this so much. I’ve always felt a kind of kinship with Seven’s journey to understand and integrate her emotions since she basically starts out with the emotional intelligence of a child. Since I learned to stay safe by repressing my emotions as a child, she’s become a kind of model of someone going through the difficult process of learning this aspect of her humanity as an adult.

Yeah, former adventist here, that hits pretty hard for me as well. Raised to fit best into a society I can never go back to, and I've never really found a replacement. I'm not sure it's either/or with the pandering either. yes, some characters seem designed for certain gazes (the original, restrictive costume was definitely a bit too much), but I also think that the show in general but in particular seven's character have really grown on me over time (I think I had star trek fatigue during the original airings of voyager and enterprise). Ryan really does a phenomenal job in the role, one of my favorite characters in the franchise now.

It's definitely a strange form of feminism that looks down on a professional actor for being conventionally attractive.

This was an Kotsko instant classic and it’s still just as good. Better even with time.
