I'm always here for Levinas-inflected readings of anything and this, "being a self is not a possession but an ethical calling" - is beautiful.

Loved the reflections on 'the Template'. Recognising the parameters of the form and then subverting them is one of my favourite things about telly.

I am more tolerant of the first season of Picard than most, but the decision to kill Hugh - and to kill him as an afterthought in someone else's story - was truly inexcusable.

I thought the first season of Picard was at least trying for something, but the execution was bad, in large part because of the meteoric rise of Michael Chabon from "novelist who wrote a good short" to "showrunner for the crown jewel of the franchise." Honestly, they should have had Seven of Nine be in Hugh's role and then had some new character be the Fenris Ranger, since the Picard version of Seven is basically a generic wisecracking badass with very little relation to the original character.
